Maintaining a Balanced Mindset During Success and Failure
Introduction
Everyone experiences both success and failure at some point in life. As ninth-grade students, you are entering an important stage filled with challenges. There are school exams, preparation for senior high school or vocational school, competitions, friendships, and even the pressure created by social media. It is natural to feel proud when we succeed, but we may also feel disappointed, frustrated, or even hopeless when we fail.
The real challenge is not success or failure itself, but how we respond to them.
Some students achieve the highest grades and become arrogant, looking down on their classmates. Others experience one failure and immediately think, "I'm just not smart enough. I'll never succeed." Both ways of thinking are unhealthy.
Islam teaches us to remain humble (tawadhu') when we succeed and to practice patience (sabr) and trust in Allah (tawakkul) when we fail. Success is never a reason to become arrogant, and failure is never a reason to give up.
What Is a Balanced Mindset?
A balanced mindset is the ability to respond wisely to both success and failure.
People with a balanced mindset:
- Are grateful when they succeed without feeling superior to others.
- Learn from failure without losing hope.
- Understand that every experience is an opportunity to grow.
- Remain humble in every situation.
Success and failure are both part of the learning process; neither defines a person's true worth.
Why Is It Difficult to Stay Balanced?
Today, many of us constantly compare ourselves with others.
Through social media, we see:
- Friends being accepted into their dream schools.
- Friends winning competitions.
- Friends gaining many followers.
- Friends achieving excellent grades.
Without realizing it, we begin to think,
"Why does everyone else's life seem better than mine?"
However, what we see online is usually only the highlights of someone's life.
On the other hand, when we succeed, we may become overly focused on receiving praise and recognition, causing us to feel more important than others.
Real-Life Situations
Case 1: Exam Results
Rina studied hard for two weeks to prepare for her Mathematics exam. She hoped to score above 90, but when the results were announced, she received only 72.
She immediately said,
"Studying was useless. I'm just bad at Math."
As a result, she lost motivation and stopped trying.
Case 2: Winning a Competition
Andi won first place in a public speaking competition.
After winning, he began saying to his classmates,
"If I hadn't joined the competition, our school would have lost."
He started looking down on others and refused to help his friends practice.
A few months later, many classmates no longer wanted to work with him.
Case 3: Not Being Accepted into a Dream School
Two close friends applied to the same school.
One was accepted, while the other was not.
The student who was rejected became jealous and began avoiding their friend because they felt embarrassed.
Eventually, their friendship grew distant.
Case 4: Social Media
A student posted a picture of the trophy they had just won.
Many people congratulated them.
However, another student felt discouraged and thought,
"I've never achieved anything like that."
What they did not realize was that the student who posted the picture had also experienced many failures that were never shared online.
What Does Islam Teach Us About Success and Failure?
When We Succeed
Allah teaches us to be grateful.
Our success is not only the result of our own hard work, but also of good health, opportunities, the support of our parents, teachers, and friends, and above all, Allah's blessings.
Gratitude helps us remain humble.
When We Fail
Failure is not the end of the journey.
Often, failure becomes an opportunity to improve ourselves.
Successful people are not those who never fail, but those who continue learning and trying after failure.
Allah says:
"...Perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you..."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216)
This verse reminds us that what we see as failure may actually be something that Allah knows is better for us in the long run.
How Can We Maintain a Balanced Mindset?
Here are some practical steps:
- Focus on the learning process, not just the final result.
- Avoid comparing your journey with someone else's.
- Be grateful for every achievement.
- Treat failure as an opportunity to evaluate and improve yourself.
- Have the courage to try again.
- Pray and put your trust in Allah.
- Celebrate success without putting others down.
- Encourage and support friends who are facing difficulties.
A Message for Students
Your exam scores, competition results, or number of social media followers do not determine your value as a person.
What truly matters is your willingness to keep learning, continue improving yourself, remain humble when you succeed, and stay strong when you experience failure.
Those who succeed today still have much to learn.
Those who fail today still have many opportunities to rise again.
Everyone has their own unique journey and timing.
Conclusion
Success and failure are both natural parts of life that everyone will experience. Success teaches us gratitude and humility, while failure teaches us patience, self-reflection, perseverance, and trust in Allah.
As Muslim students, we are encouraged to avoid extreme reactions to either success or failure. Do not become arrogant because of success, and do not lose hope because of failure. Continue working hard, pray sincerely, trust Allah, and believe that every experience is part of His plan to shape you into a better person.
Reflection
Reflect on the following questions and discuss them with your group.
- Have you ever felt extremely proud because of an achievement? How did you behave afterward?
- Have you ever experienced a failure that made you want to give up? What lesson did you learn from that experience?
- Have you ever compared yourself to others after seeing their achievements on social media? How did it make you feel?
- In your opinion, what is the difference between self-confidence and arrogance?
- If your best friend failed an exam or was not accepted into their dream school, what would you do to support them?
- What is one habit you want to develop starting today so that you can remain humble in success and resilient in failure?
